Following the Second World War, Blackburn became a model town with its affordable housing on large blocks. During this time, John Hoskins Senior and his family arrived from Ballarat and settled into the area.
Although retired, while out walking one day, much to his and his wife’s surprise, John purchased a double block of land directly opposite the railway station as an investment.
Responding to an Uncle’s suggestion who was in the furniture business, John and his son Bob opened Hoskins Furniture Store for business at 78 South Parade on the 28th October, 1954.
Slowly, surrounding vacant blocks filled with other businesses such as Priors Hardware and Raftis Hay and Corn Store. Business grew and on a suggestion from an employee, John and Bob decided to add flooring to their furniture business becoming Hoskins Furniture and Floorcoverings.
During the 1960’s, Hoskins introduced a ‘lay-by’ system to help families who were struggling financially. Offering six months interest free terms, hundreds of people took up the opportunity and the goodwill it created ensured that the business thrived.
Hoskins customers could purchase anything from dining room sets, couches, beds, washing machines and the new exciting invention – the television!
Over the years, the Hoskins family have moved away from furniture and solely focused on flooring. In 1990, Bob’s son Peter joined the business becoming the third generation Hoskins to join the family business.
On Bob’s retirement, Peter and his wife Amanda took over the business. Today, the Hoskins family name is synonymous with excellent quality wool carpet, timber, vinyl and carpet tiles.
